Room40 is very pleased to announce the theme for this year’s Open Frame Festival – Dead Silence. Drawing influence from the John Cage Centenary and his work to reconsider the notion of silence, the ever vanishing states of ‘natural quiet’ and increasing opportunities to bring voice to those previously silent or quietened through new channels and platforms – Open Frame seeks to tap into these veins of thought and explore the possible ramifications (sonic and otherwise) that might ensue.

THE HOST OF THE NEW

Pretty darn excited to be presenting a range of new editions this month.

We’re proud to be issuing the new edition HOST from Anthea Caddy and Thembi Sodell – easily this duet’s most profound and compelling release, Host is an intense journey through electro-acoustic spatiality. We’re also honoured to be issuing two incredibly delicate and intoxicating editions from Asher. The UNTITLED LANDSCAPES 1 + 2 take Asher’s reductionist aesthetics to a new focal point – two profoundly affecting collections of work that redefine the ideas of home listening.

Also, on our sister label Someone Good we’re pleased to announce the release of our new edition from FilFla titled FLIPTAP. FilFla is Keiichi Sugimoto of Fourcolor and Minamo fame – exploring the outer edges of avant-inspired electronic pop.

It’s a month of birthday related celebrations in Brisbane this April! Our friends at Clocked Out and Other Film are joining us for a little celebration for Mr John Cage’s Centenary! The Cage In Us, happens at the Judy from April 12-14 and features the only Brisbane performance of One11 (refocused). Our good friends Werner Dafeldecker and Valerio Tricoli are in town to present their octophonic reinterpretation of Williams Mix (their version ‘extended’). The following week, we welcome our comrade in esoteric sound Mike Cooper for a special 70th Anniversary event as part of Syncretism. All round stuff to make your ears smile.

A quick note to update on the visit from DJ/rupture. Sadly Jace has had to cancel his visit for March. We hope he’s able to reschedule later on in the year. Also a couple of new releases on the boil – expect a new CD from Anthea Caddy and Thembi Soddell (Host) due for release next month. Also from Someone Good a new edition from Filfla (aka Keiichi Sugimoto from Minamo) and we’re very pleased to announce a new label A Guide To Saints.

Year Of The Dragon

So here we approaching the end of the first month of the year of the dragon! It’s looking to be a very exciting year – a rising tide of new releases, including some lovely new LPS, plus some re-issues from the Room40 vault on vinyl and plenty of events all over the place.

We kick off the editions for 2012 with two new CDs and one digital release. ANDREA BELFI’S Wege, is something of a masterwork from this esoteric percussionist and composer. Easily his most considered release to date, it pulses with a subtle Reich-like motion. By contrast, eRikm’s Transfall sees our favourite French turntablist and composer deliver a collection of his stunning works for theatre and dance – a visceral and dynamic journey that charts his continued development as one of the key voices in contemporary concréte. And to celebrate the 70th anniversary of MIKE COOPER, we’re very pleased to launch a year long celebration with a free edition titled Distant Songs Of Madmen - an incredible live recording from Palermo and a reminder of his unflinching willingness to let fly with the unexpected.

To live events and we start back in February with our ongoing SYNCRETISM series which this month presents one of our favourite US based artists Mark McGuire alongside one of Brisbane’s finest avant-rock acts Blank Realm. More to come from there!

Dusk For The Year

Hard to believe 2011 is almost gone. It’s been a busy one to be sure, but still feels like we can juice a little more out of it. With that said, very glad to be welcoming the fine Mr Frank Fairfield to Brisbane for his first visit. Frank plays Syncretism at The Judy on Thursday December 15, you can nab tickets HERE. He’s joined by the equally fine Mr Ryan Francesconi, who we’re very glad to welcome back to Oz! Special thanks to our friends at Micronations for teeing up Frank’s visit.

Looking forward into the early parts of 2012, LPE and Scott Morrison team up for a very special presentation in honour of John Cage at the most excellent MONOFONA. Celebrating his 100th and the 20th anniversary of his only film work, One11 (refocused) is a homage to Cage’s varied influence and legacy. Hope you’re planning a top one Mr Cage! In Feb, we’re welcoming Spencer Clark and Mark McGuire to Oz…2012 is looking tops!

We’re back from a wonderful month in Europe, enjoying some fine kitchens, visiting some great folks and hearing some pretty darn amazing sounds. Thanks to all who hosted us!

First off, we’re very pleased to announce our latest editions – head to the Room40 Store and you can find new audio works from Pimmon, Minamo and Reinhold Friedl, and our first dvd edition from Scott Morrison! Four very fine new additions to our archive, we couldn’t be more pleased about them!

This month we’re also celebrating some launches for these editions. Pimmon, Tim Coster and Lloyd Barrett team up for microMONO.13 at the IMA Thursday Nov 10. Then Friday Nov 11, Room40 hits Sydney with Gail Priest, Adrian Klumpes, Scott Morrison and Lawrence English at the Glebe Cafe Church (37 St Johns Rd, Glebe). Following this Lawrence English launches The Peregrine in Brisbane along with the Australian debut of Lonely Women’s Club at the Judith Wright Centre, Thursday Nov 17.

We’ve got a few more things up the sleeve before the year is out…but that ought to do for now!

NARROW MIRROR

We’re on the cusp of September and Room40′s most busy period for events in the year! Add to this a batch of new events and it’s seriously action stations.

Chihei Hatakeyama’s Mirror and Steinbruchel’s Narrow are our two latest editions – both handsomely packaged in our unique diecut gatefold with insert cards. For those who remember the very early editions, this design will no doubt ring a few bells. The editions are now available worldwide through our distributors and here at the Room40 Store in both physical and digital (MP3/FLAC) formats.

We also have a swag of events on the cards for this month in both Australia and the UK. Frankly! is set to be huge this year at Brisbane Powerhouse, check out the free sampler HERE. There’s also a swag of other shows happening including a national tour from LA Vampires. In the UK, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Paul Clipson deliver some A/V magic at Cafe Oto and late this September Open Frame hits Brisbane with Marina Rosenfeld, Minamo, Fourcolor, Scott Morrison, Our Love Will Destroy The World and more!

Artist Multiples A Go Go

Very pleased to launch two new artist multiples.

The first is from UK based artist Janek Schaefer, whose 24 hour piece National Portrait is issued in a handsome appropriated universal remote control. A video about the National Portrait installation can be viewed HERE.

The second artist edition is from Lawrence English and is based on the Site Listening Queensland project recently commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival. You can see more at the site listening website.

Two new CD editions are due shortly from Steinbrüchel and Chihei Hatakeyama.
