These sessions, which explore the points of tension between spontaneous composition and free improvisation are the result of starting from the end, and somehow looking backwards and holding the thread that leads to the beginning.

Myself, Thanos Polymeneas-Liontiris (double bass) and Iakovos Pavlopoulos (percussion) share the same interest in the exploration of the language of sound. We’re interested in bringing about in the same work, both the live feeling of a concert and the precision of a studio production, without betraying either. This is an exploration of a language formation and the way it shifts in time. Music is a perfect expression of these shifts. Although anything may be possible, the trajectory of the sound is always guided by our voices the dynamic relationships between them. Perhaps we don’t always know all the intricacies of this dialect, but we listen carefully, instant to instant and through this intensity of sense, we reveal the possibilities of our shared desires to speak, and to be heard.

Each of us, born in Greece, only came in contact with one another whilst we were living elsewhere in the UK and in the Netherlands. Recently we all relocated back to Athens and this has precipitated more opportunities to meet, to play together and ultimately to record. Widdershins is a condensed series of pieces, transformed in subtle ways in post-production, but absolutely rooted in the moment of the dialogues between us. It’s the opening chapter, of exactly what we are yet to discover.
